After many years R & D, manufacturing, distributing computer cases and power supplies in Taiwan and Australia,   we have collected, we believe, valuable knowledge and true experience that we would like to share with our customers. This is an easy yet difficult question to answer but the golden rules are there.  Fortune Tec has been involved with manufacturing and distributing computer power supplies for many years, and we know how to make the power supply run well particularly in Australia. The following are some of the important tips for you to use to judge with your own hands and eyes.

Tip 1.

Weight, please pick it up to see if it is comparatively heavy or flimsy and light. Generally the heavier the better. Flimsy means bad.

Tip2.

Labeling. Look for the one bearing Australia C tick marks as well as all other international safety / EMI compliance (eg TUV CSA, Namco, UL, FCC, VDT...) marks.

Tip3.

Do not go too cheap. Every power supply has its reasonable price range in the market place. If you are being offered very cheap prices, generally speaking, just like the old saying - "there is no free lunch" it could be a relabeled model by simply bulging up the output rating to entertain your eyes only.

Tip4.

Look at the internal AC and DC cables, they need to be reasonably "thick" not "light or thin". The AC and DC current needs to travel on good free-ways, not small alleys. Small alleys generate heat not speed.

We often hear people say, I have bought this cheap power supply, the quality is "not bad"..., "it works", I am wondering if "it works" does any harm to your system or risks a sudden data loss.

A reliable well performing computer requires a constant, good quality, not-stretched power to supply to the motherboard, the CPU, the Hard Disk Drives and other peripherals... There can be no hic-cup allowed to happen on any of these parts. A cheap… "it works" power supply is just barely handling the situation…. not controlling the situation. If it barely works (meets your requirements) then it could be "the straw that breaks the camel’s back". It may be OK when new, but, remember, an 'it works" power supply may suddenly become "it doesn't work" because of any little extra load or change or from ageing.

Customers who are normally selling low end products will argue that as long as we can mount the motherboard, the Hard Disk Drive and a CD...... in the case to make a system then it's a good case. But really, do you think so, honestly?

Based on our many years of experience, it is absolutely wrong. Yes, no matter which case you buy you will normally have no problem physically to fit those items. But, is it "good enough"?

1^st We need to consider EMI (Electro Magnet Interference) and whether the case has good shielding to prevent the computer interfering with other devices (especially sophisticated equipment that is used in professional places).

Most of the advanced nations around the world will have very strict EMI/EMC regulations on electronic products in their country (related info can be obtained easily from the Internet).

2^nd Solid supporting structures for CPU, M/B, power supply and HDD..,.. Don't forget some CPU’s with heat sinks are very heavy. If any of these parts vibrate (the HDD and CPU’s have a very low vibration tolerance) even slight vibration could cause permanent damage to the computer.

3^rd Cooling. Now we all talking about Intel Dual Core extreme systems and AMD 64 extreme systems at high speed true 64 bit operations. Really they are hot enough to fry an egg. You need a very good cooling design in the case for them to "live in" or they "die".

4^th A well finished case does not just look good and fit better with your life style, but can also avoid cutting your fingers during handling assembly.

OK, after reading all you are saying about good cases, I finally agreed with your recommendation to use a good quality well built case, but how about prices?

These days due to harsh competition, the price gap between good and poor quality cases and with good and poor quality power supplies is really not great.

By Mathematical calculations, these small money gaps divided by the performance you expect + good EMI shielding + easy assembly + non- finger-cutting quality finish + good cooling + all other advantages = "0".

There are growing number of PSUs offering modular power sockets rather than a stack of cables coming out of the unit, These are great from an aesthetic viewpoint, allowing you to keep wiring tidy, but electrically, as with any connector, they are another failure point. If the plug isn't making a perfect connection, resistance in the connection could cause poor quality power reaching your PC, increasing the risk of system instability, and the connector itself can eventually burn out. This is true of any PC power connector, which is why we prefer as few connectors as possible. __________(Quoted from PC User magazine P60 Mar. 2006)

However, modular PSU is not a bad idea if you do not want to see cables twisting around inside of the case. It may not worth your time for most people to consider seriously when you look for a PC, we will rather see you check if you are getting a good quality of PSU instead
